∙ 13y agoTo provide entertainment/information to its listeners. The radio was originally invented to transfer different reports across vast areas in very little time. Over the years it has evolved to transmit music as well. The radio is now used to entertain vast amounts of people in otherwise 'disconnected' areas. Radio is available worldwide as there are countless radio stations with massive amounts of listeners.

It does that by offering commercial advertisers access to the ears of its listeners.
The more listeners the station has, the more advertisers there are who want to
buy time on that station, and the more they're willing to pay for it. So the competition
for the radio audience in any one metropolitan area is fierce, and each station uses
news, information, entertainment, music, shock jocks, local interest, etc. to attract
as many listeners as possible to its programs.
The FCC imposes no limit on the number of commercial minutes a station can insert
into its 'programing'. There was a limit on commercial time for many years, which was
voluntary, and subscribed to by most commercial broadcasters in the US. They
no longer subscribe to it, the limit has pretty much evaporated, and commercial
broadcasters are now free to carry as much commercial advertising as they want
and are able to carry before the audience begins to notice and tune away.
