The purpose of labor unions were to people to work and not lose their jobs.
They were pretty much groups that made sure everyone was being treated right in a work place
Unions have no power to keep workers from being dismissed. Employees cannot "lose their jobs" since jobs belong to the employer, not the worker.
Unions have no power to assure that members are being treated "right", only the power to complain after the fact if the employer violates the words of the contract. If the union could get all of the contract provisions it thought "right", it cannt enforce provisions not in the current contract.
