The Senate believed that Julius Caesar wanted to become a king. This would endanger the power of the Senate and certainly end what was left of the Roman Republic. All historians including the author Brian Taylor have established that key members of the Senate wanted Caesar to not be a "King". The use of the term Emperor comes later in Roman history.

Just a little footnote to the above: Please don't think that the entire senate was against Caesar. It was a minority that acted. There were only 40 or 60 conspirators (depending upon your sources) out of 600 members of the senate.
