The Persians under their king Cyrus the Great took over the Medes, and used combined strength to take over the Babylonian Empire and then Asia Minor and Central Asia. Under Cyrus and his successors Cambyses and Darius, it spread to Egypt and Thrace.
It brought a degree of peace and prosperity to the warring tribes and states in the region.
The Greek city-states within the Persian Empire revolted. Cities outside the empire intervened and the war spread.

With out Persian technology modern civilization would be way behind (in all aspects), the reason they were the best was because they created peace with war, not just savage killing, but they expanded rapidly.
