Probably because it's hard to talk about something if it doesn't have a name. You have to keep saying things like "You know, the black stuff that makes up most of charcoal". So having a distinct name for the substance is a lot more convenient.

I suppose you really meant to ask "why is carbon called carbon particularly rather than djakmium or something." Well, in addition to being easier to pronounce, the Latin word for coal is carbo.
