All US service members are issued and required to wear dog tags regardless of branch. That's not true. I've been in for awhile, and unless you're sent on an IA or GSA, you are not required to wear dog tags.
Many of the 'land army' girls did wear shorts, especially during the summer months, as they were more preactical than skirts.
The purchase of military dog tags are fairly easy and many online retailers provide the service. WWII dog tags are different from modern ones in that they have a notch in them. Modern tags do not. Also, a Soldier from WWII would have a service number listed instead of their SSN. You would have to look at content (what's printed on the tag), size, material and overall wear of the tag to help establish age and authenticity.
