Maryland was founded as a colony for Catholics by Sir George Calvert, also known as Lord Baltimore. It was soon realized, however, that they couldn't maintain a colony with only Catholicism, and so in 1649 they passed the Act of Toleration, stating that you could have whatever religious believes you wanted (as long as you believed in the Christian trinity).
