Joseph Smith's father did not claim any denomination and it is said he didn't regularly attend Sunday services at any one church. He was more of an independent guy who encouraged his family to study The Bible and learn the truth for themselves. There are records of him being involved with a Unitarian church for a short time. His mother was a Presbyterian.
Later on, both Joseph Smith's mother and father were baptized into the Mormon church and stayed with the church throughout the rest of their lives.
Joseph's parents both became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after the church was founded in 1830. Prior to becoming Mormons (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Joseph's mother, Lucy, was a member of the Presbyterian church while Joseph's father, Joseph Sr., was not a member of any church.
From JosephSmith.net:
Joseph parents both sought "personal religion" and urged young Joseph to study the Bible and seek his "souls" salvation.
