A series of military events which included Union general Sheridan to overcome the South's position in Five Forks Virginia. With Sheridan's success, General Grant attacked Petersburg, a Confederate city that laid between it and Richmond. Confederate entrenchments which had protected Richmond during the course of the war, no longer had enough soldiers to man the defences. Thus Grant had a clear path to Richmond. News of all these battles reached Richmond in time for the top Confederate leaders to escape.

In the early spring of 1865, General Lee abandoned the capitol of Richmond, Virginia. The Battle of Appomattox Court House was the last engagement General Robert E. Lee fought before surrendering to the Union Army.
Aside from the direct threat of Union General Hooker's Army of the Potomac, situated in northern Virginia, General Robert E. Lee realized that the South had vulnerable areas in southeastern Virginia and in eastern North Carolina. Federal outposts in coastal Virginia at Fort Monroe and Newport News on the Peninsula and at Norfolk and Suffolk in the south could serve as jumping off points for advances on Richmond. In addition, Federal positions at Suffolk and other outposts in eastern North Carolina were constant threats to important railway links serving Petersburg and Richmond.
