The country used to produce and export a lot of natural resources, but after the revolution it was unable to keep doing so.
The countryside had many productive farms, and after the revolution many of these farms became unproductive.
Many of the country's best and brightest residents fled, because they feared for their safety and did not want to live under a communist Dictatorship.
White people were often abused and their property confiscated, either "legally" by government order or just by the force of bands of armed thugs.
Zimbabwe has declared independence from Britain TWICE. Robert Mugabe became prime minister in 1980 and president in 1987. He is currently ruling from a hospital bed. The British treaty with Mugabe would not allow him to take the white farmers' land but they gave Mugabe money to buy the land to redistribute it to native land owners. Mugabe used the money for his personal agenda. Businesses have failed because those that took over did not know how to make them work. Mugabe is 93 and ill. Hopefully improvements will happen when someone else takes over.
Zimbabwe has a complicated history.

New Zealand win!
Zimbabwe fell in 1998 when foreign currency was used to fund the Zimbabwe army fighting in the DRC war. War veterans were also paid a further $50 000 each as compensation for fighting in the liberation war in the 70's. Later on in the year 2000 war, veterans seized white-owned farms. This was done in an unproper manner with an effort to lure back voters for Zanu PF. The effects continue as we speak with inflation, cholera, AIDS, starvation, no water, no fuel, no food, no government. The fall of Zimbabwe 1998 to present.
