Chiang Kai Shek was the President of China and in charge of the military resistance initially to the invasion of China and countries around China by the Japanese. China and Japan were old enemies starting many centuries before and when japan annexed Manchuria in 1931 the writting was on the wall for China as Japan gained strength. However, the Kai Shek regime was corrupt and was very top heavy with monied and landed aristocrats left over from the Emperor days and therefore he was seen as the enemy of Mao Tse Tung who eventually led a successful communistic revolution again Chiang Kai Shek and drove him into the sea and the Island of Taiwan after the war. China was an area friendly the US troops and airmen who used it as a base for a few years until the civil war stopped US influence. China and the Kai Shek govt saw themselves as part of the anti-japanese and barrier to Russian communistic encroachment before the war. After Hong Kong was successfully invaded by the Japanese, Chiang Kai Shek was shamed and had little effect on the outcome of the war.
