President Lincoln had tried in vain during the war to convince Kentucky slave owners to agree to a compensated and gradual reduction of slavery there, even with a time frame of two generations. Kentucky's slave owners kept their slaves until the Civil War ended and when the 13th Amendment was passed.

When the Confederates invaded, they carried many waggonloads of weapons and uniforms to equip the recruits they were hoping for, but very few volunteered. General Bragg felt that his invasion had failed and retreated into Tennessee.
