The Nile River flooded its banks once a year. When it did it brought a fresh supply of fertile silt which made it possible for the population to increase and for fewer people to do the work required to feed everyone. This made it possible for the Egyptians to develop religion, writing, artisanship, architecture and other activities which would not have been possible if they were devoting themselves to food production. On the other hand, since the Nile destroyed land markers they needed to develop rudimentary geometry to reassign land to its owners; since the Nile floods were regular they also needed to learn to predict them accurately to make best use of the growing season. Finally, since wealth now had to be distributed they developed a much more hierarchical social system and means of accounting.
