In the early days of the Navy, Midshipmen were officer apprentices/candidates, with at least 3 years of sea duty, and responsibilities equal to what are today considered Petty Officers. They were very young (typically around 11 to start), and learned a rating before being commissioned.
The film "Master and Commander", with Russell Crowe as British Captain Jack Aubrey, is an excellent example of shipboard life for midshipmen of that era.
