serfs made up the bulk of the feudal system during the medieval period the serfs lived on wealthy land owning class's land which they worked on as a living, serfs were uneducated farmers that were essential to the food supp lie in the mid evil world because their the individuals growing/raising crops. during the black plague when a third of Europe was wiped out the feudal system broke a part and most governments became centralized, when their land was cheap because if the lack of people serfs became land owners themselves thus creating a middle class and the Middle land owning class became the epicenter of nearly every high middle age society
