The US Marines fought the Imperial Japanese Army for control of the island of Iwo Jima in Feb 1945.

The role of the US was that of victor. On 19 - Feb - 1945 the US marines invaded the island as part of Operation Detachment. At this point in the war the US possessed superiority in both weapons and men and from the start of the operation, victory was assured. Despite this the Japanese fought long and hard and refused to surrender. Of the more then 18,000 Japanese soldiers on the island at the start of the war, only 216 surrendered.
