A Roman army was composed of several legions (sing. legio, plur. legiones). The legions were composed of cohorts(sing. cohor, plur. cohortes). The cohorts were subdivided in centuries (sing. centuria, plur. centuriae). The smallest unit was the contubernium the equivalent of squad in a modern army. Its men were called contubernales and they shared a tent with they NCO. Later their number was increased to ten with the addition of two auxiliaries (soldiers from Rome's allies).
