It was not the Isrealites who chose the way in the book of Exodus it was God. And god went before them aas a cloud in the day a pillar of light in the night.
It was the route God chose for them to the Holy Land (Exodus ch.13).

Later, the Israelites were enslaved by the Egyptians (Exodus ch.1), with backbreaking labor and cruel decrees (ibid). By the time of the Exodus, many of the Israelites had given up hope (Exodus ch.6).
