Two words come to mind: Conservative and Loyal

there were two types of secretaries in the 1950's and both words describe them.

the secretary in the secretarial pool, and the later so called "Private Secretary"

these two were loosely distinguished by the former being a temporary job until she snagged a husband and the latter that tended to marry late if at all

Prior to the 1950's (1940 actually, being before WWII) men were predominantly in the personal secretary role since women were notoriously unreliable for long term jobs, women were expected to marry and raise a family as their job in life, and this could not be done if they had a full time job also.

the Fifties had secretaries shown to be actual human beings in movies ("Funny Face") and on Television ("Private Secretary" and later Della Street on "Perry Mason")

The secretary has always been an extension of their boss and as such needs to reflect that business tone.... the fifties were very conservative, no businessman wanted to be thought a Communist (RE: McCARTHYism) so almost all were ultra conservative in demeanor and their secretaries reflected this without hesitation.
