In the American Civil War, both sides were Americans fighting. The South had seceded from the Union and made their own "country" called the Confederacy. During the Civil War they were mainly called the Confederates, or the Rebels. The North was considered the Union, the United States of America. On their uniforms, the Union soldiers had a belt buckle that said US on it.
The US entered the war in April of 1917 and were on the Allies side.
