Alexandria, Virginia is on the south side of the Potomac River, virtually just across the river from Washington DC. It became early on a base of Union operations for the warfare in Virginia. It soon became a busy Union port heavily fortified by the Union. By most standards, Alexandria was the largest military supply area in the world.
