The battle of Normandy or D-Day as it is commonly referred to was a key turning point in World War 2, not only because it was amongst the biggest amphibious assaults ever mounted but because it forced the German army to fight on two front and greatly eased the pressure on the Soviet army who were fighting with the allies on the eastern front.

In World War II, Normandy was chosen as the invasion-point for the Allied attack on German-held Europe because of its proximity to England (the staging area for the invasion) and the relatively mild wind and water conditions off its coast. In addition, Normandy was far enough from the location of substantial German reserve-units so as to give Allied troops more time to solidify themselves once ashore.

It was important because it created a western front against Germany. An overlooked issue concerning Operation Overlord (D-day) is that it was not crucial in winning against Nazi-Germany. The USSR were in 1944 winning on the eastern front and slowly pushing the Germans back.

But it meant that the war ended faster than it would have if they had avoided an invasion and only contiued the bombings of Germany.

The invasion was also important because it prevented USSR from gaining to much influence in Europe. If UK and USA didn´t invade then USSR would have "liberated" a greater part of Europe and most likely turned those countries into communist satelite states as they did with the east-European countries.

The name D-day was not just used for the invasion of Normandy it is used as a general term in the military as an important moment or the time of a important operation. So, they called it D-day because it was a focal point in the war and whether they succeeded or failed was very important to the rest of the world. As for the land that just simply means they landed(arrived) on the beaches of Normandy that day.
