According to the YMCA web site in 1844 George Williams started the YMCA movement as a volunteer. The first student YMCA began in 1856 at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. In 1853 the first YMCA for blacks was founded by Anthony Bowen as freed slave in Washington DC. Providing help to newcomers and immigrants has always been part of the the YMCA's work. In 1856 the nation's first known English as a second language class was held for German immigrants at the Cincinnati YMCA. YMCA housing began in 1860s to give young men moving to cities from rural areas safe and affordable housing. Chicago's Farrell Hall was the first YMCA dormitory was completed in 1867. Between 1922 and 1940 the YMCA rooms grew from 55,000 rooms to more than 100,000 this more than any hotel at the time. In 1861 5,000 members served as surgeons, nurses and Chaplin's during the civil war. The volunteers distributed medical supplies, food, and clothing. They also taught soldiers to read and write. The first YMCA open with gyms in 1869 and in 1881 the Boston YMCA staffer Robert J. Roberts made the term "body building" and developed exercise classes.
