First went officially online in 1969, it was gradually replaced by what's now known as the internet by the 1980's. Some remnants of ARPANET were known to have remained in service until 1989.
ARPANET was started in the late 1960s by the federal government, industry, and educational institutions. Through the following decades, it evolved into what is known as the Internet today.

ARPANET stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. ARPA created it during the time of cold war. It was the first packet switching network and was also known as the 'Predecessor of the Global Internet'. Packet Switching has become the leading foundation for both voice and data communication worldwide. Prior to this, data communication was based on circuit switching. A System could use one communication link to communicate with another machine with packet switching.
The U.S. Department of Defense, through its Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, now DARPA), developed the precursor to the internet in the late 1960s. This project, known as ARPANET, was launched in 1969 and aimed to enable communication between different types of computers over a network. ARPANET laid the foundational technologies for the internet we use today, evolving through the 1970s and 1980s into what became the modern Internet.
The first public internet, known as the ARPANET, was developed by the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in the late 1960s. Key figures in its creation included computer scientist Leonard Kleinrock, who contributed to the theoretical foundations of packet switching, and Robert Taylor, who helped to secure funding and support for the project. The ARPANET became the first operational packet-switching network and laid the groundwork for the modern internet.
