A baby born to a slave was automatically a slave. They were often sold away from mom as young as 3-4 years old.
Actually it has been Philadelphia since colonial times.
In colonial times, an overseer was the boss of day-to-day slave activities. The overseer did whatever he needed to do to make sure slaves did their job.
Lots of times slave owners would rub feces (poop) all over the slave and it would act as humiliation.
