The son's role in the family in Ancient China are very important. Poor or rich, the son would be the one that will carry out the family's bloodline.
If he was the son of the Ancient Chinese Emperor or Empress, he would be the Prince. If the Empress gave birth to another son, the firstborn would be called "First Prince", whilst the newborn would be called "Second Prince". Usually the First Prince is the one who will take the Emperor's throne to carry out the bloodline and marry a Princess. The Second or Third Prince can get the throne if the father wants him to be the successor. Most of the time, the Second Prince would be the one who gets the role of being the General of the Army. However, if none of the Princes match the job, a worthy and active person will take the job.
If he was the son of an Ordinary Commoner Family, he would be the one who would work on the farm, help out in Family's store, carry messages or packages, and many more that most people today don't do unless in slavery.
Just remember that being a son is the most important job, because he would have to carry out the family's bloodline.
