∙ 11y agoIn the American south, the coastal portions of most states relied on plantations growing cash crops (mainly cotton and tobacco, as well as rice, a foodstuff), and worked by enslaved people. The poorer inland regions of the south, particularly the mountains, were also agricultural, but were mostly family farms growing enough food to survive, a practice known as subsistence agriculture. Southern cities had relatively little industry, relying mostly on trade, whether in slaves or agricultural goods. To this day, almost all southern cities are either on the coast or along major rivers for this reason. The main exception is Atlanta, which, while not on a river, grew up on a trade hub of a different kind: a key railway junction.
