All of the Apollo missions leading up to the Apollo XI Moon landing on July 20, 1969, tested the equipment and procedures for the Apollo XI mission and those that followed it. However, the Mercury and Gemini missions also contributed to the overall knowledge concerning human spaceflight and various procedures (good and bad) that were ultimately used.
The ten Gemini missions were before Apollo and tested many of the procedures necessary before Apollo could proceed, such as spacewalking, docking and rendezvous techniques. Prior to them were the Mercury missions.See the Web Links to the left for more information.
Project Gemini, originally named Mercury Mark II, was the second US space program. It was a bridge from project Mercury to the Apollo moon missions program. The spacecraft carried two people and tested rendezvous and docking.
There was a Mercury Program in the US in the early 1960's, it was the program that put the first American astronaut into space. They were called "capsules", a one man space ship that was boosted into space by a rocket, they had very little maneuverability. The program was followed by Gemini, which had 2 men in each capsule, then Apollo, where 3 men were in each capsule. Apollo was the program where the first human landed on the moon.
The project Gemini was important because it prepared the Americans for the Apollo moon program. Many technologies developed for the Apollo missions were tested in space during the Gemini program. One of the highlights of the the Gemini project was the first EVA (extra-vehicular activity) performed by Ed White during the mission Gemini 4. (first EVA done by US)
the Canadarm is the crane-like deviced on the space shuttle orbiter that lifts items from the cargo hold and releases them into orbit. It is also used to position astronauts and mission specialists to allow to perform a specific task. It is called the Canadarm because it was designed, developed, and manufactured by the Canadian space agency. WRONG! It was designed, developed, manufactured and tested by Spar Aerospace Ltd., a Canadian company. I know--I was the program manager for Canadarm I. Terry Ussher

When something is mean tested it means it has been tested to the extreme. It would be a very thorough test.

The US program began in 1950 and tested its first device in 1952 and tested a deliverable bomb in 1954. The USSR program began in 1950 and tested a deliverable but limited bomb in 1953 and tested a full scale deliverable bomb in 1955.
A non-means tested program is one for which eligibility is not based on a certain level of financial means. In the United States, most programs including food stamps, medicare, etc. are means tested programs.

So far, only the US has been able to send humans to the moon and return them. The Appollo Program was the manned spaceflight program that had the specific goal of reaching the moon, exploring and bringing back samples. In support of that goal, the Mercury and Gemini Programs tested launch capabilities, vehicle function and in-flight procedures.
The factor that is being tested in an experiment is called a variable. The factor that is measured or observed is called the dependent variable.
Baby bedding is run through standardized ANSI tests, as well as some UL test procedures.
