Great Britain needed money because of the French and Indian War (also called the Seven Year's War even though it was 9 years long, from 1764-1763) so they decided to tax the colonies.

The Stamp Act was just one of the many taxes imposed on the colonies.

The Stamp Act (passed by the British Parliament in 1765) was passed by George Grenville, Prime Minister of Great Britain. It raised taxes on everything that had to be printed: paper, legal documents, publications, and playing cards.

This made the colonies very angry because the tax came when they were already in an economic crisis.

Virtual representation v. actual representation came up.

The Stamp Act was lager repealed 1766, but it was followed by the Declaratory Acts that basically showed that the British Parliament still had power over the colonies.
