he fought against racism and anti apartate in South Africa. He felt very strongly about his beliefs and for that he was jailed in 1962 and convicted of treson and sentanced to a life sentanced in prison.he was then released on feb 11th 1990
The most notable positive contribution of Mandela's presidency was probably the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. When Apartheid ended the country was full of people who had suffered gross human rights violations and wanted justice, but the crimes were so widespread that it wasn't feasible to imprison everyone who had been part of the previous regime without causing a total collapse of the government. The TRC allowed the country to face up to its past without destroying itself.
On a less positive note Mandela's presidency has been justifiably criticized for its poor handling of the AIDS epidemic in a country that has one of the highest rates of infection in the world. (He dedicated relatively little time to addressing the problem before retiring as President, a decision he now acknowledges was a terrible mistake.)
