  • Series of at least 24 earthquakes ranging from magnitude 4.4 to 6.4 in the region of Japan.

Friday March 11, 2011

  • 2:46pm (Japan standard time) Reported magnitude 8.8 or 8.9 earthquake followed by tsunami hits northern coast of Japan. The magnitude was later updated to 9.0 and again to 9.1.
  • 2:54pm: Numerous aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 through 6.3 strike surrounding area once every few minutes for rest of the day.
  • 3:15pm: Magnitude 7.9 quake strikes just 27 miles off coast of Japan.
  • 3:27pm: The first tsunami strikes Fukushima nuclear plant.
  • 7:03pm: Prime Minister Naoto Kan declares nuclear emergency status.
  • 9:00pm: An evacuation order is issued by Japan's government to persons within a 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) radius of Fukushima I station
  • 11:00pm: The first tsunami waves hit Hawaii about 9 a.m. EST (1400 UTC)

  • 7:52am: Japanese media reporting that explosion heard at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi plant around 0630 GMT
  • 2:42am: The Japan Times reports a radiation leak has been confirmed at Fukushima nuclear power plant.
  • 2:54am: Yuji Yagi, associate professor at Tsukuba University, reports quake measured magnitude 9.0, rather than 8.8 announced by Japan's meteorological agency.
  • 1:17pm: Japanese authorities preparing to distribute iodine to residents in area of both the Fukushima nuclear plants to help protect from radioactive exposure, according to International Atomic Energy Agency.
  • 1:32pm: Reports of further aftershocks in Japan. A magnitude 6 earthquake hit Fukushima at 22.15 local time (13.15GMT) on Saturday, NHK reports.
  • 3:30pm: Evacuation of residents within 10 km of Fukushima I and within 3 km of Fukushima II are underway.
  • 9:40pm: Evacuation zone around Fukushima I is extended to 20 km, while the evacuation zone around Fukushima II is extended to 10 km

Tuesday March 15, 2011

  • 10:31pm: Reports of a magnitude 6 earthquake occurs near Mount Fuji in Japan at 22.31 local time (13:31 GMT). Being an active volcano raised further concern around the world.
