The battle of Stalingrad. Michael Montagne Stalingrad was a turning point, allthough several battles on the eastern front can be regarded as turning points. The first one was the battle of Moscow (october 1941 - January 1942) then there was Stalingrad in 1942 and Kursk in 1943.

the battle of Stalingrad was the turning point in Europe. The city of Stalingrad was situated on the River Volga in Southern Russia and Hitler wanted to take it to cover the flanks of his forces advancing to the oil fields but also because the city bore the name of Stalin.
The battle turned into a meat grinder and the Russians refused to give it up. After months of bloody street fighting, the Russians broke through the weaker Romanian forces on the Germans flanks and surrounded the German 6th army. starvation, typhus and temperatures of -40 degrees eventually forced the 6th army to surrender.
Not only did it turn the tide of ww2 (the Germans never recovered from this defeat), but it was the worst battle in human history.
only 5,000 of the 360, 000 men of the 6th army returned and the Russians lost 500, 000 men dead.
