On the outbreak of hostilities, the elderly General-in-Chef, Winfield Scott, declared that it would be a long war, and that the first year should be spent blockading the Southern ports, to starve the Confederacy of food and war supplies. After that, there would be a drive down the Mississippi, and only then an offensive campaign of large armies.

This plan was ridiculed as the 'Anaconda' (slow strangulation), because everyone else thought it would actually be a short and bloodless war.

Later, when they found they were wrong, they did put a similar plan into effect.

When Grant was promoted General-in-Chief in March 1864, he effectively carried out slow strangulation by ending the system of prisoner-exchange, and then just watching the Confederates run out of manpower.

Can you be in a civil union with one person and married to another since the two types of unions are distinct?

No. In states where same-sex civil unions or marriages have been legalized, what you are describing is a crime for which you can be prosecuted (bigamy). Whichever event took place second is considered a fraudulent attempt at marriage or civil union and was never legal, not even before it was discovered. In states where same-sex civil unions or marriages have NOT been legalized, you are not in a civil union, you are only married. Your civil union is legally nullified upon crossing the state line.

Does Arizona's Proposition 102 ban same-sex civil unions?

It's important to note that Arizona didn't recognize civil unions for homosexuals in the first place, so the purpose of Prop 8 wasn't to ban a freedom (which was already denied) so much as bar AZ courts from being able to overturn the ruling. The job of the court is to determine whether or not something is constitutional. Making a constitutional amendment stating that marriage is defined as an act between a man and a woman bars the court from potentially allowing civil unions for gays. So yes, Prop 8 reiterates the ban on civil unions between homosexuals, but no, it doesn't ban civil unions between heterosexuals (though one can certainly argue it illegitimizes them and makes them more vulnerable). What did US Civil War historian John Bigelow cite as the three definitions of strategy?

John Bigelow ended his career as a American military writer. Using the US Civil War as examples and as inspirations for his writings, Bigelow distinguished three kinds of strategy. These were the following:1. Strategy proper, or often said, regular strategy aims at depriving the enemy of their supplies;2. Tactical strategy, which aims to overcome the enemy in battle; and3. Political strategy, which has the goal of embarrassing the enemy's government.Bigelow's definitions are unique and not main stream thought concerning strategy. Many historians place Bigelow's number 2 in the first position. This the Union tried but it was not sufficient. Strategy number 1 was created in the US Civil War when it became clear that the South, despites battlefield defeats, continued to have the ability to raise armies. Bigelow's third strategy is controversial. Since he claimed to use the Civil War as his source of examples, "embarrassment" was not the Union's political goal but instead, the political goal was to thwart war Democrat inspired "peace initiatives and use political diplomacy to hamper any aid or formal recognition of the Confederacy by the European powers.

How many civil unions have been registered in Ecuador?

At least 7 same-sex couples have registered their "uniónes de hecho" (de facto unions) as of December 2009, of which 2 couples were foreigners. The first such registration in Ecuador took place in August 2009. Civil unions were legalized in Ecuador in September 2008. There have been reports that the registros civiles of Ecuador have been refusing to obey the law and register same-sex couples. 6 of the 7 were reported by attorney Edgar Andrés Buitrón Vaca who personally assisted the couples in successfully registering their unions. In 2011, the body of Mr. Buitrón (age 28) was found hanging from a terrace in Quito, Ecuador, the victim of what was called a suicide. The 7th union reportedly took place in December 2011 between an Ecuadoran and a Briton, and was later accepted as a civil partnership by the British government for immigration to the UK.
