It was an internal affair following a failed coup by Nationalists under Francisco Franco against the established Republican government. The Soviet Union, Mexico, monarchists and a few International Brigades against the Spanish Army which was supported by Germany, Italy and Portugal. It is sometimes seen as a dress rehersal for WW2.
