The weather for the Hopi Indians is pretty much like the weather for anyone who lives in the high southern Rocky Mountain plains - hot and dry summers with very rare rain showers, not much autumn weather at all, light frosts in the winter with some snows especially at higher elevations. Spring begins early (mid-late February). The high elevations and clear skies cause large UV exposure and crops must tolerate this. Canyons at high altitudes can have a fair amount of snow and spring runoff, but most smaller rivers and creeks will nearly dry up by early summer.

The weather in the northern central plains is hot and humid in the summer with some heavy downpours and frequent thunderstorms. Fall has fewer thunderstorms and the temperature and rainfall are quite variable. Early snows that melt quickly sometimes occur in the fall. The winters are generally quite cold. The Sioux range extended from present day North Dakota and Montana down to Kansas and Colorado. In the Black Hills (one of the traditional wintering regions) the weather is fierce in winter and narrow canyons provided some shelter from persistent winds. Spring starts in early April in Kansas but much later in the northern portion of Sioux territory.
