How were Iroquois women involved in decision making?

Haudenosaunee women are considered equal to men and as such the Clanmother role is equal to Hoyane (Titled Chief).

The clanmother's duties include electing the Title Chiefs and calling a council. While the Clanmothers let the Hoyane run the councils they are not allowed to make a decision without consultation with the Title Chiefs' clan and Clanmother support. All decisions have to reach consensus for a resolution to be pasted.

What religion were the Mohawk Indians?

Each native tribe or group of tribes had their own ancestral beliefs and traditions. Most were animist traditions believing in the spiritual powers of Nature and Mother Earth as well as in the spirits of creatures, natural forces and landscape features. The Mohawk also had the same kind of beliefs, the Summer Initiation Festival, which is still celebrated, is their most traditional ceremony. Because they were part of the Iroquois confederacy, they also had to assimilate to the colonists religion.

Also, the native way is not a religion whatsoever. It is a way of life that follows the teachings of our Mother, the Earth. It involves being in the heart and thus one with that which is in all things. While each tribe/nation has its own ceremonies based on its interaction with the earth as well as their own practices, they all basically follow the thought that walking as one with all our relations is the way of life to follow.

What are mohawk beliefs?

1.The Six Nations people tell of a great woman who died while giving birth to male twins; the right-handed twin was named Teharonhiawako and the left-handed one was named Sawiskera. Teharonhiawako was the more righteous of the two. Sawiskera had a great capacity for evil and was deceitful enough to convince his grandmother that he was really the righteous one.

2.The Gaiwi:yo meaning Good Message, was revealed to Sganyadai:yoh through a series of visions between 1799 and 1804. Four Messengers the spirits of the four cardinal points brought the Gaiwi:yo to Sganyadai:yoh when he lay in a coma as a result of his excessive drinking habits. These four guardians, sent by the Creator, gave Sganyadai:yoh messages that would emancipate his people from the stranglehold of the Europeans.

Who were the Iroquois?

The Iroquois were an Indian tribe that thrived in the eastern woodlands. With good farmland and plentiful forests they were able to thrive off the wilderness. They built structures called longhouses that could be cut into sections so that they could fit many families. The men of the community were excellent hunters and taught the young boys how to master the skill. The women prepared food and weaved cloth. They taught the young girls how to do so. They also ate corn, beans, squash, berries, deer, elk, fish, cornbread, and soup. Wow! Boy do Indians like squash! Their enemies were the Dutch. They wore breech clothes, overdresses, and moccasins.

What technologies did the people of Catal Huyuk develop?

The people of Catal Huyuk developed a wide assortment of arts, crafts, and tools. At the end of the Old Stone Age, thousands of years before Catal Huyuk, the warming of the Earth made more plants grow. This caused more animals to survive. This caused more food for people, which lead to more people. People started agriculture, or more known as farming or raising animals (one technology of Catal Huyuk). Agriculture caused people to build permanent homes, because before they had to travel with a herd of animals or to places where there were still plants. This made them have plenty of times to do other things. Once they realized that they could do one thing instead of having everyone do everything (one person weaves baskets, other person makes tools, other person farms, other person harvests plants, etc.) they started using specialization (another technology of Catal Huyuk). Specialization is any trade, job, or profession. When people realized that specialization made them lack other tools or items for use, they traded (another technology) their surplusitems. A surplus is an extra amount of anything. This way, people could get what they need without losing anything that they really need. Trading lead to interaction. Interaction is the exchange of beliefs, technology. or ideas. For example, Person a is from TownA. Person b is from Town B. b is a shoemaker. a is a curtain-weaver. a trades a shoe with b, who gives a a curtain. b finds out that a makes his curtains fluffy. b tells the curtain-maker of Town B to make his curtains fluffier, He does. This is one example of interaction. Interaction lead to civilization. Civilization is a culture that developed systems of specialization, religion, learning, and government.

What was the Iroquois Confederation and how was its governing system important to the framers of the Constitution of the United States?

AnswerThe Iroquois (French name) Confederacy or Six Nations (British name) are really called the Haudenosaunee (translated means, "People of the Longhouse") is a collection of five original nations bound together by mutual peace and friendship. The founding nations were the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca Nations, with the Tuscarora Nation joining later. Each Nation was separate to conduct their own business in relation to trade, but issues that would effect the entire collective were discussed in Grand Council such as warfare and peace agreements. Each Nation put forth their own representatives to an inter-nation Grand Council of fifty appointed leaders.

This council would meet regularity in Onondaga territory and were frequently visited by many outsiders. Cadwallader Colden was a historian who wrote a poplar book named the History of the Five Nations. Which circulated throughout the entire Colonial era and in Europe. Benjamin Franklin learned from this book and from firsthand experience with the Confederacy and gained an understanding of how their government worked.

In a letter to James Parker on March 20, 1750/51 Franklin states:

"It would be a strange Thing, if six Nations of ignorant Savages should be capable of forming a Scheme for such a Union, and be able to execute it in such a Manner, as that it has subsisted Ages, and appears indissoluble; and yet that a like Union should be impracticable for a ten or a Dozen English Colonies, to whom it is more necessary, and must be more advantageous; and who cannot be supposed to want an equal Understanding of their Interests.

Were there a general Council form'd by all the Colonies, and a general Governor appointed by the Crown to preside in that Council, or in some Manner to concur with and confirm their Acts, and take Care of the Execution; every Thing related to Indian Affairs and the Defence of the Colonies, might be more properly put under their Management."

He proposed the Albany Plan of Union in 1754 which had the framework of a colonial government based in North America.

While the current United States of America is not an exact copy of the Haudenosaunee government their are accounts from many Colonial figures who were aware of and acknowledged the workings of the Grand Council.

Currently there is much debate between acdemics over the exact influence the Haudenosaunee had on the Constitution of the United States of America.
