The worst plane crash in U.S. history outside of the 9/11 attacks was that of American Airlines Flight 191 on May 25, 1979. The left engine of the DC-10 fell off the wing due to damage from improper maintenance. The engine severed the hydraulics in the left wing, rendering the control surfaces useless. The plane rolled over and crashed, killing all 271 on board and another 2 people on the ground.
The crash at Tenerife Airport in the Canary Islands was the worst crash involving two aircraft in history, killing 583. The crash involved a PanAm 747 and a KLM 747.
