∙ 11y agoDemocratic candidate Al Gore, who was Bill Clinton's Vice-President, narrowly lost the electoral vote count, and thereby the election, to George W. Bush. . Bush won in the electoral vote 271 to 266. The vote in Florida was especially close and Florida's 25 votes were more than enough to tip the balance to Gore. Therefore suits challenging the outcome and demanding recounts quickly were filed by Gore supporters. Eventually, the suits were were controversially decided by the US Supreme Court, which ruled in Bush v. Gore that planned recounts ordered by the Florida Supreme Court could not be conducted, due to the lack of statewide standards for such recounting and the necessity to settle the election within a reasonable time.
