The atomic bomb was originally intended to be used on the Nazi Germans to end the war in Europe. The Atomic Bomb was not completed prior to the German surrender. When President Roosevelt died Truman was told of the bombs. He agonized for months over whether to use the bombs on the Japanese who refused to surrender unconditionally. He had to decide whether to use the bombs to motivate the Japanese leadership into surrendering or send the hundreds of thousands of troops onto the mainland of Japan to fight. It was estimated a million or more Allied Forces and Japanese people would die until the Japanese chose to surrender or be nearly annihilated. It was also estimated the war would last another year or more if the Japan was invaded by the Allied Forces. Another problem Truman had to deal with was the fact the Russians were close to invading Japan. The western allies did not want Stalin in Japan after the war was over. If Truman chose to drop the bombs he could possibly prevent that and also hope to end the war which would save millions of lives. The Allies would have to trade hundreds of thousands of live to spare millions of lives. You have to consider that Japanese had a population of 100 million people and close to ten percent of them were trained to fight. Thankfully, the risk of dropping the bombs did work.

Nuclear bombs have not been used in wars since because of the devastation they cause.
