The early Barbie dolls used a variation of Bakelite. It was hard, and the dolls were very durable. Because it was so hard, the dolls had holes in their feet to correspond to a "spike" in the high-heeled shoes that fit on their feet. It kept the dolls' shoes on.

There are two answers to your question. There have been Barbie dolls called "Barbie as Rapunzel" but there is also a Mattel Rapunzel doll, who would be considered a Barbie. Mattel patented the Twist N Turn waist in 1966, and the TNT Barbie and Barbie-sized dolls were first sold in 1967. That style of doll was used for hundreds of Barbie and Barbie friends up through 1999, including the Mattel Pocahantas dolls sold in the mid-1990s.
