War communism was brought in to force the new socialist system upon the populace of Russia after the October Revolution of 1917 when Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks took power in Russia. The Bolshevik Revolution was not a true communist revolution. The people of Russia were not ready to give up working for personal profit just yet. The Bolshevik regime expropriated large portions of crops from peasant farmers either by forcing them to sell produce to the government at low prices or simply just taking them. The Bolsheviks had been faced with the obligation to feed the people in the cities or be themselves thrown out of power. The only way to do this was to take crops from farmers.

One main element of communism as Karl Marx saw it was that people would produce according to their ability and take according to their need. War communism was communism forced upon the peasant farmers whereby virtually all the crops they had the ability to produce was taken by the government leaving the peasants who produced them just enough to fill their own needs.
