In 1758 Benjamin Franklin and professor John Hadley discover that evaporation of alcohol and other volatile liquids, which evaporate faster than water, can cool down an object enough to freeze water. This eventually led to what we call air conditioning.
the bifocal spectacles, lower compartments on ships keeping water out, and the odometer are used today.
The harmonica ----- Benjamin Franklin invented an instrument called the glass harmonica, which is rarely seen today and is not related to the harmonica we commonly see and hear played. Franklin's harmonica was based on earlier designs consisting of sets of glasses, partly filled with water, that were rubbed with a wet finger. It consisted of a series of crystal glass hemispheres, mounted on a shaft that went through their centers. When the shaft was turned, the hemispheres rotated, and a wet finger applied to make them sound. Unlike the glasses, which were tuned by filling with varying amounts of water, the harmonica hemispheres were tuned at the time they were made, according to their size. There is a link below to the section on Franklin's instrument in an article on the glass harmonica.
He invented a little-known instrument called the "glass harmonica". It was a series of glass discs of graduated sizes all on one axle. It turned by foot treadle in a reservoir of water, with the upper half of the glass discs out of the water. Placing a moist finer against any one of the wet discs gave a musical tone.
He used wagons and buckets of water and used the buckets to put out the fire. He and some of his friends and other town members would help
The idea dates back to ancient Egypt where heiroglyphs mention small lenses that made things larger. In 1 AD, Seneca the Younger (tutor of Nero) noted that small letters could be seen larger with a globe or glass bowl filled with water. In 1284, Salvino D'Armante created the first wearable pair. Later improvments include concave lenses by Nicholas of Cusa and dual panel bifocals from Benjamin Franklin
