The constellation Aquarius takes its name from the Latin name meaning water bearer. Having roots leading back to ancient Babylon, the constellation Aquarius has always been associated with a vase overflowing with water. In Babylon this was the representation of the god Ea. This filtered down into Greek mythology and is most commonly associated in modern times with the Greek youth Ganymede who was the water boy of the gods.
The constellation name of Aquarius may drive from nearby constellation of Aquila (the eagle). One version of the myth of Ganymede has the youth carried off by Zeus (in eagle form) to become the cup bearer of the gods. Another suggested origin is that the "river" between Aquarius and Capricornus represents one of the labors of Hercules, the diversion of the river to clean the Augean stables.
There is no Greek mythological figure by the name of Aquarius. The constellation is supposed to represent Ganymede, who was not Zeus's son, but a Trojan prince abducted by Zeus to be the god's cupbearer and lover.
