Electromagnetic waves include radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, x-rays, gamma rays. All of these are really the same thing (at least, for a physicist); the difference is in frequency, and the amount of energy per photon.

Electromagnetic waves, or more accurately, electromagnetic radiation is when an electric field and magnetic field (which are always tied together) are oscillating.

It is like if you take a rope and place it on the ground all stretched out and move one end side to side (quickly), it makes a wave go down the rope.

As the electric and magnetic fields move back and forth, they create the same waves being emitted from them. They waves are called electromagnetic waves/radiation.

There are 7 classifications of these waves. Radiowaves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet light, X-rays, and gamma rays. These blend into one another in a continuous spectrum.

What Waves that can travel through a vacuum?

Electromagnetic waves, such as light and radio waves, can travel through a vacuum because they do not require a medium to propagate. This is possible due to the nature of electromagnetic radiation as oscillating electric and magnetic fields that can exist independently of a medium.

Are light waves electromagnetic or mechanical?

Light waves are electromagnetic in nature. They consist of oscillating electric and magnetic fields that do not require a medium (such as air or water) to propagate through. This is different from mechanical waves, like sound waves, which require a medium to travel through.
