To eliminate the possibility of hidden or unknown variables the scientist must a control experiment.

Anything that affects the outcome of an experiment?

They are called "variables", and there are three forms. The dependent variable is the result of the experiment or function. The independent variable is the one that is deliberately changed to observe the effect on the dependent variable. The controlled variables should be maintained constant during the experiment so as not to influence the result.

What is an example of a hidden variable?

Quantum Physics: Hidden Variables: Undiscovered particles, forces, energies, or other unforeseen or miscalculated influences concerning observation or experiment.

Why is it important to guard against hidden or unexpected variables?

Their effects could be potentially harmful.

Why must a Scientist identify controlled variables in addition to independent and dependent variable?

The experimental design tries to ensure that the variable being tested is actually what is tested and not a hidden or unknown variable. The control variables are kept constant in an attempt to do this. For example: an experiment to test the effect of fertilizer on plants. Pot plants are gathered from friends and relatives and fertilizer solution is added to half of them to see if they grow more rapidly. Bad experimental design! It could be the type of plant that grows more rapidly, the age of the plant, the different soils may affect the plant growth, the size and type of pot... These variables would all have to be kept the same for every pot ie same type of soil, sunlight, water, plant, volume of soil and then change only the fact that some plants get fertilizer(same amount for each) and the others do not.
