The axle nut is right hand thread. Turn it counterclockwise to loosen.
Front axle shaft nut torque: 175 ft lbs. Rear axle hub nut torque: # Tighten the adjustment nut to 163-190 N·m (120-140 ft. lbs.) while rotating the wheel. # Loosen the adjustment nut 1/8 of-a-turn (120 degrees) to provide 0.001-inch to 0.010-inch wheel bearing end play.
on the rear axle housing, sprocket side, there should be a large spanner nut. Loosen the two bolts that tighten the rear axle in the housing and turn that spanner nut. Not sure which direction, you should be able to figure that out.
Left, I suggest getting the special wheel nut socket for the job.
The axle nut on a 2000 Tiburon is 32 mm. These nuts are incredibly hard to remove and is usually easier to use an impact gun to loosen it.
It might not have been torqued properly.

To tighten a left-handed nut, turn it counterclockwise. To loosen it, turn in clockwise. It's the opposite of a "regular" fastener.

The axle nut looks like it has a retainer on it but it's just a part of the nut! put a wrench on it and turn it off!
