Artillery

I would have to disagree. The most dangerous weapons commanded by man in that war would have to be the machine gun. Tens of thousands died when they went and charged into nests of them. The most dangerous weapon of nature in that war was disease. I think as many men died of disease as they did from combat deaths.

Artillery, obviously, that's why steel helmets were introduced, artillery barrage would throw in the air countless stuff which then fell in the heads of the soldiers wounding them and later killing most of the wounded. Machine gun was a strong weapon but artillery was more deadly over time. If artillery was that weak and machine gun that strong, we wouldnt have seen so much artillery in WW2.

Artillery really came into it's own during World War 1. There were previous wars where artillery was used but the type of amuntition that was used was more deadly and specific to their specific targets. Shells meant maim and kill humans with burst that occurred just before inmpact with the ground came into use. As well as incendiaries used to burn down towns, artillery was also used to deliver chemical weapons on the battle field. The machine gun is a close second.

It probably would be a combination of artillery and machinegun fire. Then poison gas...

I believe that only 3 thousand men* were killed by using gas as gas masks greatly reduced the amount of deaths
