The guns they use were called muskets. They would have to reload after every shot, because they were mussel loaders which you load through the barrel. They would have to wait tell enemys were close range to fire because it takes a while to reload.

i Believe they used bayonets a gun that uses gun powder, a bayonet also has a knife at the bottom of it, soldiers went through combat training on learning how to use one
