in WW1 they used as handheld weapons mainly basic bolt action rifles with a leatheality range of roughly 1400m attached with a bayonet and also, in the case of officers a revolver was normally used.

they had machine guns but they were cumbersome turrets tacking roughly four men to operate also a large amount of mortars were used to bombard the enemies trenches

also gas was used to put the enemy lines in disoray so the enemies were easy picking

one weapon new to the end of the Somme was the tank it was very slow and could barely cary anything more than it's own Armour which is weak compared to modern standards and a machine gun and at the end of the war it could carry more men and had a revolving turret
