Why 1Castles in medeval times changed from motte and bailey castles to concentric castles. They changed them because the motte and bailey castles (which were made out of wood) had lots of weaknesses: Sets on fire easilyRots quicklyIsn't very strongAlso, King William (William the conqueror) (the ruler in those times) built motte and bailey castles to stop any rebellians and would only take a few days to build.Concentric castles were made out of stone. Stone doesn't set on fire, doesn't rot and is very strong. They also didn't just change because of the weakness of the motte and bailey castles but because of the influence of change of culture, and warfare. This lead to them becoming more safe and easier to defend and attack.HowWhen King William (william the conqueror) wanted to replace the Motte and Bailey castles he knocked them down and replaced them with concentric castles. There are many more types of castles
It was originally Latin, 'mota', meaning a mound. We have the term 'mott and bailey' castle from this, the mott is the fortified mound. During Normal times, the meaning shifted from the mound itself, to the defensive ditch dug around it - and later, water-filled versions.

Weapons got better and gun powder was used. The old wooden mott and bailey couldn't stand against gunpowder so they had to change for the same level of defense.

Motte and Bailey castles were built in the 11th century just after King William I (Willilam the conqueror) first took over Britain in 1066. Motte and Bailey castles were made out of wood. They were mainley built because they were cheap and light so they were easy to build. They were later replaced by Stone keep castles (Stone castles) because Stone castles were stronger, wouldn't rot within a few years, wouldn't burn etc...

Classic Motte & Bailey castle has a surrounding circular wall (and outside the optional moat, or "motte"), and inside will normally be a hillock, and atop the hillock will be the keep (or "bailey"). Most Motte & Bailey castles are of stone construction, erected during the Norman conquest.
Most began as wooden mott and bailey types and eventually evolved into stone. The wood structures were very prone to fire and when gun powder was introduced to Europe the wood couldn't withstand the assault from cannon fire.I'm not sure but i think castles were built of of mud and stone but when that didn't work they were built out of wood. When the they found that the wood caught fire they started to build castles out Stone. After a while people destroyed castles using Gun Powder. Then after this the castles lost there usefulness. The castles I have been to have had varied types of stairs. Some are made from stone and they get more narrow as you get closer to the top. The later castles have wide broad stairs and they were designed to accommodate the women's dresses with a bustle. The Mott and bailey castles had wooden stairs that were rather narrow and not well made.
